Minutes from June 9, 2009
Present: Bill Stoermer, Heather Bennett, Chuck Dykstra, Linda Hollis, Lynne Loerop, Bill Wilkin, and Greg Naftzger.
Absent: Patti Housenga and Paula Rogis
Minutes: A motion was made by Dykstra and seconded by Loerop to approve the minutes from May 12, 2009. Motion carried.
Treasurer's Report: Hollis reviewed the May Treasurer's Report: revenue as $9.66 and expenditures of $3,902.98, leaving an ending balance of $4,768.10. Hollis apologized for not making a deposit in May but additional revenue will be accounted for in the June report. A motion was made by Dykstra and seconded by Wilkin to accept the May Treasurer's Report. Motion carried.
Executive: Bennett provided a copy of her monthly meetings report. The annual dinner will be held at the Del Curley Conference Center at Agri-King on June 18, 2009, and will be catered by the Fulton Meat Market. Best Buds will supply some floral arrangements for decorations. Bennett provided a sample of the dinner program for the board to review. Greg Naftzger agreed to give the presentation to the outgoing directors. Bennett reminded board members to submit their nomination for volunteer of the year award. Stoermer reported Visual Imaging is working on a design for the retractable sign but he has not received and quote, yet.
Tourism & Promotions: Naftzger reported two new members have joined the City Tourism Committee. Wilma Huizenga representing the Fulton Historical Society and Barb Milton representing the Dutch Days Committee. The Dutch Dinner went well and the Dutch Days Committee was pleased with Corner Deli as the caterer. The millers have planned three events at the mill this summer: Dutch Ag Video, Dutch Cheese Maker, and Groningen Windmill Presentation. FACE is in the process of awarding several grants to local organizations and the Early American Crafters will begin cataloging artifacts in the Blacksmith shop. The new Fulton visitor guide should be delivered soon.
Bridal Walk - we have 20 vendors thus far and the committee is making contacts for more vendors. A post card was sent to 250+ brides that registered at the Clinton and Sauk Valley Bridal Walks.
Celebrate Abe - Bus Trip - we have 35 people signed up, thus far.
Fulton Summer Nights - committee (Greg Naftzger, Heidi Kolk, & Heather Bennett) has found sponsors for each of the nights and the Fulton Chamber of Commerce will host the August 13 event. The summer nights are held the second and fourth Thursday in June, July, and August from 6pm to 8pm. The first night is this Thursday, June 11, sponsored by Second Reformed Church; and they have several activities planned for the evening.
Government Affairs: Stoermer reported Mayor Larry Russell may remain as the Co-Chair for the city's CCI Committee (Competitive Communities Initiative). The Complex (community/recreational facility) is progressing and the group will begin seeking funds soon. The Complex Board is still interested in pursuing the Wildwood Farms Building. The Complex is a private initiative and is an official non-profit organization. The Riverfront Corridor subcommittee continues to meet and plans to give a presentation to the Fulton City Council requesting they pursue engineering bids for plans to redevelop the old fire station and downtown streetscape. The CCI Committee will begin pursuing an affordable housing initiative soon.
Member Ed Committee - The New Member Biz After 5 event was a great success, with 60+ chamber members attending. The business tour with Visual Imaging is tomorrow, June 10, and 31 people have made reservations. Bill Davis, adjunct faculty with Ashford University and Vice President of Vendomak & Pepsi-Cola Bottler in Rock Island, is interested in giving a motivational speech during a luncheon with the chamber membership sometime in November. Member Ed Committee member, Jeremy Klopfenstein, is finalizing the details with Davis. Bennett has contacted Sauk Valley Community College about some workshop opportunities for September. FACE and the chamber will help organize another Hazardous and E-Waste Clean-up day on October 3. The event will not include vendors or speakers, only a household clean-up opportunity, for a couple of hours. A ribbon cutting for Cuttin' Loose With Style will be held on July 1, 2009, at 5pm.
Downtown: Chuck Dykstra reported the Fulton Retail Development Group (FRDG) has installed the hardware on the doors at the old theatre building and exterior painting will begin soon. The group would like to put the building on the market in July. Chuck Dykstra contacted Penny Zuidema, downtown property owner, regarding her building for sale, however; it appears she will be asking nearly $100,000 for the building, so FRDG is not interested. Dykstra is putting a steep pitched roof on his "cottage" building located on 10th Avenue, currently occupied by Kreative Rentals. The group is currently exploring what other building opportunities are available in the downtown district.
Old/New Business: The Fulton Historical Society and Dutch Days Committee have not responded to letters sent to them regarding the Ronald Reagan 2011 Celebration or the bounce house.
