Historic Mural To Be Erected In Fulton
During the regular meeting of the Fulton City Council on Monday, February 18, Heather Bennett, Tourism Director, gave a report on an upcoming project between Fulton and the Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition
Mural in Rochelle, IL
(ILHC). The ILHC has received $443,000 in federal grant money to erect murals in each
Illinois community along the historic highway. The murals depict unique stories of historical significance pertaining to the community.
The ILHC will work with a Fulton committee comprised of two Fulton representative, two ILHC representatives, and one artist to come up with information, photos and a design for the Fulton mural. Fulton needs to suggest two or three locations and the ILHC will help choose the location based on traffic, potential vandalism, sunlight, etc. The mural will be approximately 10'x20' and will be designed to be affixed to a building located along the Lincoln Highway. All of the murals along the historic highway are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010, with the goal of completing 12-13 murals per year.
The mural is given as a gift from the ILHC to Fulton with minor stipulations. The city must agree to display the mural for at least three years and to take care of any routine maintenance and cleaning required.
The Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition was formed to provide services to participating communities, sites and residents throughout Illinois to help them develop their Lincoln Highway story and experiences. The Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition will implement a strong central marketing campaign that will promote the "Every Mile is a Story" image and the ability to experience those stories through the participating sites and services and Road Trip Packages.
