August 7, 2017

 

Mayor Ottens called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM and directed the City Clerk to call roll. On roll call Ald. Randy Boonstra, Gene Field, Margaret Crosthwaite, Dan Nederhoff, Sue VanKampen, Barb Mask and Keith King. Paul Banker was absent. Also in attendance Bill Shirk (City Attorney), Tammy Garibay (Deputy Clerk), Randy Balk (Interim City Admin), Dale Sikkema (Zoning Director) and James Rhoades (Police Chief).

The pledge of allegiance was recited. The invocation was given by Pastor Royann Mathews.

Visitors at the meeting included Clink Kettler, Karen Bush, Elsie Foster, Chuck Dykstra, Jane Orman-Luker, Leone Wood, Phyllis Henry, Dave Huizenga, Brenda Huizenga, Irma Swanson, Kyle Koph, Jerry Lindsey and Nick Moffit. Dave Huizenga was present to let the council know about the flooding that occurred in his garage and the condos next to his property. He had 22 inches of water in his garage during the last flooding. Presented pictures to the council so they could see the damage to his property. The Interim City Administrator Randy Balk is looing into the issue and trying to find out if the issue can be resolved to avoid the flooding in the future.

Mayor Ottens asked if there are any questions on the consent agenda; approve Meeting Minutes from July 17, 2017. With no questions Ald. Boonstra motioned, seconded by Ald. Crosthwaite to approve the consent agenda. Roll call vote (7 yes, 1 absent).

Business

Approve ordinance to raise the MUT for Telecommunications as previously voted on but now have final ordinance to make change. Ald. Boonstra asked, “What does telecommunications include?” Attorney Shirk said there is a definition with a long list of items, did not see it necessary to include but will send out to alderman for review. With no further questions Ald. Boonstra motioned, seconded by Ald. VanKampen to approve the Ordinance for MUT on Telecommunications. Roll call vote (7 yes, 1 absent).

Mayor Ottens would like to get some roads repaired yet this year, asking for the councils approval to have the Interim City Admin to request bids to repair 3rd Avenue and 6th Street from 3rd Avenue to the Cemetery. Mayor Ottens also pointed out to get bid on v-curve from 9th to 12th along 3rd Avenue. Expect to continue repairing roads in the spring. With no further questions Ald. Boonstra motioned, seconded by Ald. King to get road repair bids. Roll call vote (7 yes, 1 absent).

With no further discussion Ald. Crosthwaite motioned, seconded by Ald. Nederhoff to adjourn. With voice agreement the council adjourned at 5:52 PM.
